When Ogden Corp. announced last year that it would spin off part of its resource-recovery unit to the public, the investment community responded with little more than skepticism. Why should we care, they seemed to ask, about converting garbage to energy? Today, a month after Ogden Projects Inc. sold its stock to the public, investors can't get enough of the company's shares, which have risen more than 40% in value since early August. Welcome to the year of the Exxon Valdez, where the environment sells, and sells big. Sparked by fears that the world will spend much of the 1990s cleaning up its mistakes of the previous four decades, Wall Street and corporate America have discovered environmental companies. Yields Are Rallying - And Here's a List of Solid Dividend Payers
In bear markets, investors' concerns turn from capital gains to such considerations as income. FactSet Data Systems has prepared a screen that scans for dividend growth and comfortable coverage in stocks, as well as better-than-average current yields. To make the list, the annual payments of firms had to be boosted by 5% or more in each of the past 5 years, while the payout ratio - the percentage of earnings distributed as dividends - had to be under 75%. The stock also had to show a current yield higher than 4.5%, compared with the 3.8% return of the Standard & Poor's 500 index. Twenty-six firms met the criteria, including Monsanto, Westinghouse Electric, and the UK's Imperial Chemical Industries ADR. Some firms, such as Technalysis, have small market capitalizations, and the markets in their stocks are thin. Others, like Talley Industries and Whitman Corp., are burdened with high relative levels of debt. Still others, such as Ford Motor and Eaton Corp., have suffered a drop in earnings in recent months.

Boeing Outlook Optimistic Despite Stock-Price Tremors, Mideast Crisis
The Middle East crisis has done little to alter The Boeing Co.'s conviction that it will be building jetliners at a brisk pace through the year 2005. "Who knows what's going to happen?" said David Sepanen, Boeing's manager for marketing research. "But, right now, we view what's going on in the Middle East as a short-term problem." Boeing's optimism aside, investors have been treating the company's stock like the plague in recent weeks. From a 52-week closing high of $61.50 per share, Boeing stock has plummeted to a Friday closing price of $41.625. That translates into a loss of market capitalization (computed by multiplying the number of outstanding shares of common stock 246 million by the share price) of $4.98 billion. (excerpt)

Investment Strategy and Vehicles: A Winning Strategy for the 1990s; A Nifty Fifty for the Nineties
Thus far, the 1990s have brought investors unpleasant news. However, if investors stay calm and adjust their portfolios to capitalize on coming demographic and economic changes, the 1990s may produce nice profits, despite a bad start. Stocks still promise to be the best investment, and bonds eventually should prove to be a reasonably good buy. Real estate looks unpromising, and the same may be said of gold (unless inflation soars or fears run rampant). In the 1990s, the single most important determinant of investor success will be asset allocation - how assets are distributed among the various classes of investments. While asset allocation is crucial for successful investing, investors should not underestimate the importance of stock picking. Growth companies - businesses with earnings that are steadily increasing at 15% or more a year - will lead the market in the 1990s. One example is Rockwell International. Overall, the investment outlook for the 1990s can be characterized as worse than that for the 1980s but not terrible.

Davis may bid for Lorimar-Telepictures
Wall Street noted that [Marvin Davis] still hasn't put down a formal bid. Lorimar stock rose only 3/8 to $13. ``If people were taking this seriously, Lorimar would have moved up considerably. The bottom line is, it hasn't,'' said Morgan Stanley & Co. analyst John Tinker. Lorimar is allowed to back out if Warner's stock value does not bring Lorimar shareholders at least $15 per share, a condition met if Warner's stock price averages $36 1/8 a share. If Lorimar cancels, it must pay Warner $10 million, and if Lorimar is acquired by a third party, Warner has the right to buy an 18.5% stake at $15 a share.
